Commercial wind farms for California’s coast have been cleared. In the past, soldiers have opposed wind turbines as a “barrier” to ships. Using wind is becoming cheaper and more efficient.
Commercial coastal wind farms are likely to emerge in central and northern California soon, as the federal government plans to implement wind farms in both areas. The U.S. military has previously expressed concern that wind turbines could not be used to navigate naval farms, but has since allowed them to do so.
Although not a new technology, wind power is still surrounded by myths and mysteries. In the video series Energy Science-Resources and Power ExplainedDr. Michael E. Wisssem, Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at the University of Washington in St. Louis, explains how wind turbines work.
Bernolli and Air
“Wind power is like an extension of an airplane, but vice versa,” says Dr. Weiss. “Instead of turning the engine around and generating wind power that pulls the plane forward, the natural wind blows through the rotors, creating power to light the engine. But the principle is very similar. ”
According to Dr. Weissation, both the wind turbine and the aircraft propeller are built on the basis of the Bernoul principle. Simply put, Bernoley’s principle is that the difference in pressure causes something to move in the direction of low pressure. The wind does not blow on a razor blade, but the blade is shaped in such a way that the air on one side is longer than the other, which creates a difference in the pressure of the Bernolli principle.
“Wind turbines have made great strides in material science,” he said. “Older industrial turbines had fewer rotors than now because large rotors get tired and cracked. There is a tremendous amount of stress applied to the shaft of windmills and wind turbines when the shaft rotates, creating a torque.
However, the larger the rotors, the more efficient the turbine.
Advantages and disadvantages of ocean winds
He said coastal wind turbines are the fastest growing wind energy sector, as beaches provide some of the best places for strong and safe winds. The U.S. Department of Energy also predicted that the National Renewable Energy Laboratory alone could generate up to four terawatts of energy.
According to the Washington Institute of Pure Energy, the United States currently uses three terawatts.
However, there are still problems with wind power.
“Beach turbines are the biggest hurdle [the] Construction costs – as well as operations and management – are much higher than land turbines, ”said Dr. Wise.
According to Dr. Wisdom, another factor to consider is how to properly reduce turbines overseas.
“One of the most important considerations for deploying wind turbines is that there is a limit to how far the turbines can be separated before their turbines begin to decline significantly,” he said. “The wind turbine breaks the airflow behind it into a very chaotic state, and if another turbine is directly behind it, the efficiency of the second turbine – now stuck in the first turbulence and turbulence – will fall dramatically.
In the future, offshore wind turbines must be widely distributed in order to be effective – and the Navy can safely navigate the ships.
