After a nationwide search, Shavon Short was named a collaborative provocate at Mary Washington University for Equality and Inclusion. She will play her role in January.
In short, UMW will continue to work with the President and the commentary team as it continues its efforts to achieve its goals in terms of diversity, equity and inclusion. She will be responsible for organizing a multi-faceted, equitable and inclusive council at the University and continuing to build the more inclusive Mary Washington. She oversees the University’s Office of Disability Resources, Office IX, Cefzon, and all diversity education and training programs.
I look forward to working with my new UMW family to continue and extend the rich heritage of diversity, equity and inclusion in and around the campus. That’s what immediately attracted me to UMW, ”Short said. As I do my best for the university, I look forward to the opportunity to have an extensive listening tour on campus.
She came to Mary Washington from Bloomberg University and is currently a member of the Tenant Faculty in the Department of Communication Studies, serving as Special Assistant to the President on Diversity, Equality and Inclusion. During her stay in Bloomberg, she led several initiatives at the University and in the state of Pennsylvania. As the co-chair of the president’s faculty on diversity, justice and inclusion, Short led a team to build and implement the university’s comprehensive, equitable and inclusive plan. She has designed and facilitated diversity, equity, and inclusion training to promote knowledge, understanding, and advocacy throughout Bloomberg University.
A native of Maryland and a former McNair scholar, Short holds a bachelor’s degree in communications studies from Forstberg State University and a master’s degree in communications from Purdue University. She taught a variety of subjects, including interpersonal communication, nonprofit relationships, and small group relationships.
Her past work has been to lead the Frederick Douglas Institute for Academic Excellence and to conduct the Central Atlantic LGBTQA Conference. According to her dissertation, she is a project leader for the Inclusive Future Faculty Initiative.
