Oil and gas operators are worried when it comes to the release of New Mexico

Jerry Mack’s strict emissions laws on oil and gas can hurt small and marginal pipelines throughout New Mexico.

Machaw, who owns San Juan Resources in Farmington, which operates about 40 wells in the northwestern San Juan Basin, said the new legislation proposed by the New Mexico Environment Department (NMA) has increased the cost of small wells that could jeopardize production in the state.

The NMED rules were presented to the State Environmental Improvement Board (EEB) during a two-week hearing on Friday.

The board heard testimonies from oil and gas producers, stakeholders, elected officials and concerned citizens.

Some argue that strict laws are needed to combat pollution and climate change, and industry leaders have urged the state to be careful not to pass laws that could negatively affect one of the world’s largest industries and drivers.
