Kikuletwa Renewable Energy Training and Research Center on a mission to transform the energy sector

The Kuquletwa Power Station is located at the western end of Sanya Plains, about 20 km southwest of Moshi.

Currently, Kikulata is located 20 km from Bomangombe town, 20 km from Moshi town, 70 km from Moshi-Arusha highway and Arusha town, 20 km from Bomgambom town.

Kilimanjaro International Airport is just 12 miles[12 km]west of Kiquila.

A.D. In 2014, Arusha Technical College (ACC) acquired ownership of the power plant by turning it into an international training center and providing power to the national grid.

ACC is renovating and developing the power station to serve as a center of excellence in renewable energy training by focusing on energy, solar, wind and biomass and at the same time providing it to the national grid.

The feasibility study shows that the current capacity of the coke is 1.7 megawatts, but the station can provide up to 17 megawatts of electricity depending on the storage capacity. The Coke Renewable Energy Training and Research Center (KRETC) has been assigned to conduct courses in clean energy technologies.

KRETC’s mission is based on three initiatives. Vocational Training Center for the Arts, Technicians and Power Generation Technologies; Micro Hydro Turbine Inspection and Certification Center; And active participation in power generation using renewable energy resources.

Training activities

The selection of courses for the Cucumber Training Center is based on an analysis of the situation with the participation of various stakeholders from Arusha Technical College (ACC), Energy and Electricity, Education and Government Policy Developers.

The analysis shows that there are no institutions that offer completely specialized skills in renewable energy resources and there is a demand for skills in renewable energy capabilities.

Courses have been developed to fill the gap, starting with the training of hydroelectric power, the most widely used energy source.

Distinguished courses

Long-term training (craftsmanship programs)

• Program names (nva i-iii)

A) operation and maintenance of hydroelectric power plants;

B) installation of solar power systems;

C) construction of bio-energy systems;

D) installation of wind power systems;

E) indoor electrical installation;

F) pipe and pipe joints; And

G) Masonry and brick and installation.

Short-term training

In general, many programs are being developed for renewable energy workers on technologies such as hydro power, solar, wind and biomass energy resources.

The first introduced courses include:

A) hydropower works and maintenance;

B) Solar PV systems, sizes, installation and service and maintenance;

C) in PLC Power Generation Engineering;

D) maintenance of the water distribution network;

E) Design and construction of electricity distribution network;

F) Transformer and motor reversal technology; And

G) Small water turbine development.

Application

There are currently 120 students enrolled in the center, so we expect 120 trainees for long courses and short vocational courses in five years.

Kikuletwa EASTRIP Project

The Kikuletwa Renewable Energy Research and Training Center has been selected by the World Bank team to be located in ten (10) centers in East Africa, Ethiopia, Kenya and Tanzania to convert TVET into Regional Flag Training Institutions (RFTI). Training programs specifically for the EASTRIP project.

Cucumber was selected to become the center of technical and vocational training in renewable energy.

The development objectives of the project are to increase access and improve the quality of TVET programs and to support regional integration and regional economic corridors.

Its objectives and outcomes will be achieved through three-pronged activities, with priority given to the development of selected quality regional technical and vocational training centers for higher quality skills development, secondly to capacity building for national TVET and capacity building for regional TVET. And project coordination.

Therefore, the project will increase the number of classrooms, engineering workshops, modern training equipment, increase the skills of teachers and trainers, and cooperation with the industries in training.

An important milestone in the project is the enrollment of cross-border students for long courses. To achieve this, the Center of Excellence, East African countries must, through their respective policies, gain the recognition of competence from neighboring countries.

Success Stories

ACC has been able to analyze the situation on the demand for renewable energy skills for various industries, five new programs for technicians and artists, and a draft document has already been discussed and presented to the National Assembly by key stakeholders. Technical Education (NACTE) to be approved soon.

Arusha Technical College has received additional support from Hanze University in the Netherlands, which supports teachers’ training in renewable energy technologies and supports gender enrollment in engineering, especially in renewable energy capabilities.
