Elon College, College of Arts and Sciences on Monday, August 16 awarded the Teachers, Teachers, Service, Leadership and Scholarship Awards to teachers and staff.
Excellence in teaching
Associate Professor of Psychology CJ Fleming
During his time in Elon, Fleming taught more than 500 elementary students, including a Lulu scholar, an honorary associate, and several members of Elon College. She prepares those students for research presentations at disciplinary and undergraduate research conferences as well as academic publications. Her commitment to the academy is evident in her participation in a joint advisory team in deep and in-depth self-assessments with the Faculty of Natural Sciences. In addition to a research consultant, Fleming actively advises on undergraduate work. As a current faculty member for internships, she has spent time in departments and offices working closely with the Student Professional Development Center to improve the number and quality of experience in the college.

Associate Professor of Political Science and Policy Studies Jason Hussein
As Elon’s public relations director, much of Hussein’s service to the university and college is in the public eye – providing public access to the election and broadcasting news, participating in television panel discussions on elections and politics, and broadcasting interviews in the region. Hussein implemented a long-term plan for the election, as well as a partnership with the Charlotte Observer and McLean newspapers. He is generous with his time and energy working on many boards and committees. He took over as chairman of the Academic Council in May and is a social and behavioral science representative on the board. Hussein previously served as a member of the Faculty of Civic Participation, and served as Chairman of the Ready and Flexible Academic Affairs Committee, the Citizens’ Participation Council, the Strategic Planning Committee, the President’s Graduation Committee, and the Academic Council Student Life Committee. He also successfully conducted numerous teacher searches.

Amanda Tapler, Senior Lecturer in Public Health Studies
Since joining Tapler four years ago, she has led many initiatives and programs for her class, college, and university. She will serve as chair of the interim department in 2019, co-directing PHS Writing Initiative TV, honoring Kapa Omiron Nu – a public health research community – and supporting special events and activities hosted by the department. Tapler is a member of the International Faculty Council and previously served on the Social Science Curriculum Committee. Together with the University, she co-chaired the Peer Teaching and Peer Education Committee, served on the Student Safety and Safety Committee, and served on the International Education Advisory Committee, the Lumon Committee, and was appointed Chair of the Special Committee. Hami Studies Associate Professor Amy Alokoko
Alokoko is a sought after scholar in the field of Hindu studies. She has published articles and chapters of books and presented numerous presentations at educational conferences around the world. Aloko often supports her scholarship through successful gift ideas. She has written or co-written three national or international charitable ideas, and received $ 1,000 from the Melon Foundation: Religious Youth Corporation (IFYC) Curriculum Development Grant and IFYC Cohort Grant for $ 5,500 for religious education with colleagues from St. Thomas and Augsburg University. . Her most recent scholarship opportunity was published in the Journal of Hindu Studies and Field Work in Religion and will soon be included in the Georgetown Companion to Religious Studies.
“Dr. Aloko is a distinguished educator, consultant, campus leader and scholar known for his brilliant ethnic research,” said associate professor and chair of the Department of Religious Studies. We are very fortunate to have her as an Elon Fellow.
Associate Professor of History Andrea Sin
Sin is an expert in Jewish history and has written articles, chapters, and conferences around the world. This summer she gave three invited presentations in Germany and Austria, including a keynote address at the International Conference Sanctuary Otilian Benedictine Monastery and Jewish History, 1945-48, organized by the Institute of Jewish History and Culture at Ludwig Maximilian University. St. Otilian Archangel, and the Jewish Museum Munich. Sin attended an international research conference at the Munich City Library and taught a seminar on the European Summer School of Jewish Studies at the Jewish Museum in Hohenems, Australia. Her recent scholarship in German and Jewish studies was reflected in the reorganization of liberal education, the rebuilding of Jewish life in Germany, and the history of Central Europe. Sin is currently researching an upcoming project.

Associate Professor of Geography Ryan Kirk
Kirk teaches numerous courses in geography, environmental studies, and the Elon Core curriculum. It is committed to responding and adapting to student needs, respecting individual growth, and supporting students beyond formal goals. Last year, Kirkos revised his urban design course for three weeks to address the need for nationalism. Adapting to a mixed classroom, Kirk incorporates new courses designed by the Summer Technical Design Institute by focusing on classroom options, team flexibility, and project management and bringing in foreign speakers to make the course professional. Its courses employ hands-on learning and field studies, problem-solving, collaboration and professional application of knowledge. Students continually express their appreciation for the variety of approaches in the classroom and the care it takes for their individual learning.

Tch Madzima, Assistant Professor of Physical Sciences
Madzima teaches a number of advanced physical education science courses, including exercise, exercise testing and prescription, exercise and cancer and research methods. While at Elon, he taught undergraduate studies. Madzima sets annual goals for learning and learning in her classes. Using Elon’s Opportunities to Improve Participatory Education: Participating in Institutions to Strengthen Literacy in Physical Science Courses and Technology Use – is currently focused on increasing mobility-based learning and deepening consulting practices. It uses a variety of lessons and technologies in the classroom, and integrates lessons on topics related to diversity, equality and inclusion. For the AIDS Health and Performance Course, Madima students were asked to write a specific “aid” for a popular magazine and a regular review of scientific literature. The College recognizes all program assistants and administrative assistants with the Staff Excellence Award. This is the second year that the award has been extended to college staff who are overworked for the benefit of students, teachers and colleagues.
