New brand new Dundy and Angus College team will launch a new training fund to give local businesses ‘competitiveness’.

The Business Partnership team, led by Economic Partnership Manager Karen Gibson, includes three skill consultants who are actively entering the workplace to identify and assess current and future skills gaps and training needs.

Once training needs are met, a new team of 17 accredited trainers is recruited to bring business training to the table, bringing the latest industry differences to the table. As sectors and technologies continue to emerge, college staff are currently adapting to new capabilities ranging from wind turbines and low-carbon transportation to high-volume manufacturing, insulation and solar panels. Courses such as mental health first aid, leadership and digital marketing are also being developed.

The new team was welcomed by Dandi and Angus Chamber of Commerce.

To support their training programs, businesses can apply for financial support. The college has received around ሚሊዮን 1 million from the Scottish Government Flexible Human Resource Development Fund and is currently accepting applications. Fund-paying businesses will be given access to training worth up to £ 15K, and SMEs are eligible to train up to £ 5K worth. SME is currently working with a group of cities designed to further support the market with more skills, and the College is leading a broad support community with partners.

Starting in 2022, most training will be provided between two new centers of excellence – the Michael Scottish Innovation Park (MSIP) Skills Academy and the College’s Advanced Manufacturing Training Campus.

The objectives of the training are twofold. In the areas of digital, manufacturing, energy, and renewables, the college is re-recruiting individuals to create more workers in areas that are struggling to find workers such as closing gaps in skills gaps, such as care and hospitality.

The team is working closely with employers in areas such as car mechanics that may be outdated if workers are not able to improve their skills, as the sector is working towards zero-carbon emissions by 2045. At the same time, the team and the broad college are supporting it. Businesses in the construction sector are required to comply with a new law.

Karen, who joined the college in January after eight years of work with Business Gateway, said: “Local businesses are slowly emerging from the most challenging times, however, there are many more hurdles and we need to work together. To overcome these.

“Coville has created opportunities for some businesses to grow and expand their supply chain, and their business models and future plans have changed. As a college, it is our responsibility to help them plan for the future, analyze their needs, identify gaps in skills and provide the necessary training. That is, providing a strong CPD portfolio or ensuring that their existing employees are trained to comply with new laws, using the money creatively, developing existing skills, and providing easily digestible skills that will enable them to continue their work while training. We are also working with large companies with in-house coaches, strengthening their existing programs and increasing the cost of our courses.

In the meantime, the college aims to build a pipeline for strong, well-trained individuals working in these new sectors.

Karen continued: “In addition to working with businesses, we offer a number of short and free courses for employees to develop current careers or start new careers for the unemployed. This portfolio, created during the lockout period, has started courses in management, maintenance and marketing, but is now expanding to meet new, more efficient requirements as a renewable sector.

“Yes, economic recovery is a major issue right now, but so is social rehabilitation. And as we work with local businesses and their workforce, we also need to shed light on new topics to reach those who are not currently working and to build their capacity. Introducing free courses is a great way to do this to ensure that you can get further training and advancement in that area. This is also for the benefit of businesses: we are helping unemployed people find skills, we are providing a strong pipeline of local people to fill these skills gaps.
