Ravi Gortala, PhD, is passionate about inspiring future engineers and helping local businesses. The $ 1.3 million grant from the US Department of Energy (DOE) will help him and other faculty create new learning opportunities for New Haven University students and reduce the region’s carbon footprint.

The grant, part of an award from the University of Connecticut, will enable Dr. Gortala, who has previously received funding from agencies such as NASA, the US Department of Defense, and DOE, to partner with Yukon. Start at the University of New Haven Satellite Industry Evaluation Center (IAC). IACs provide site-specific recommendations to small and medium-sized manufacturers to help improve productivity, reduce waste, save energy, train tomorrow’s workforce and increase information security.

The support is part of a $ 60 million national investment plan to increase energy efficiency in manufacturing. The 32 universities in 28 states – the largest group of university-based IACs – will allow local small and medium-sized producers to conduct industry assessments to reduce costs and energy consumption and provide further professional development. Each IAC covers an area of ​​150 miles.

“We did not have such a center in Connecticut,” said Dr. Gortala. “This will make a big difference. Our center will have a carbon footprint that affects energy conservation and water conservation – not only in Connecticut but also in southern New England and New York and possibly New Jersey.

Dr. Gortala will serve as the Center Director, and his colleague Nadiye Erdil, PhD, Associate Professor of Industry and Systems Engineering, Assistant Director. The team includes two university cybersecurity experts, Ibrahim Bagili, PhD, Founding Director of the University’s Connecticut Institute of Technology, and Mohamed Nassar PhD, Assistant Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science. Both help with cyber security reviews.

IAC provides career opportunities for first and postgraduate students each year. Their training includes safety procedures, energy audits and reporting.

“We will develop a new curriculum with courses focused on industrial energy audit,” said Dr. Gortala. “Students will be trained on the tools used in field auditing. They also develop communication skills with teacher supervision, including verbal and written communication skills.

Dr. Gortala, an engineer, researcher, creator and educator, has more than 25 years of industry experience. His love for education was sparked by the post-school science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) program for girls in the North, GRITS (Women, Research, Innovation, Technology, Science). Carolina began teaching at the University of New Haven in 2012 and changed from teaching middle school to university students.

Dedicated to increasing diversity and inclusion opportunities, Dr. Gortala is committed to making these efforts an integral part of the IAC. He will also participate in directing and training sessions for new IAC directors.

Dr. Gortala is looking forward to playing a leading role with the Center and providing opportunities for collaboration and knowledge sharing. He is also excited about the opportunities available to the students – and the impact of their work on the region, the manufacturing industry and the environment.
